Birth Place of Tulsi Das :

The author of famous book ‘Ramcharitmanas’ Goswami Tulsidas was born about five hundred years ago. Due to the absence of any written evidence, scholars were not sure about the exact birthplace of Tulsidas. However, on the basis of people’s hearsay it is said that he was born at Rajapur village. But the situation of Rajapur village has been a riddle for a long time. It was considered that Rajapur might be situated near Ayodhya or Varanasi or Chitrkoot or any other Hindu Pilgrimage palce. But the problem is that near all these religious places a village named Rajapur is found. Meanwhile some vested interest people fraudulently published a book entitled, Mool Gosian Charit’ in order to prove their claim that village Rajapur is situated near Chitrakoot. But the fact is that Gosian Charit is a book written by Baba Beni Madhav Das who was a disciple of Tulsidas. It is mentioned in this book that ‘Rajapur Sarju Ke Teera’ But in Moolgosian Charit it was changed as ‘ Rajapur Yamuna Ke Teera’ This change was made only to prove that Rajapur is situated near Chitrakoot on the bank of Yamuna. Not only this some influential people of Banda district, constructed a memeorial also at Rajapur village near Chitrakoot.A campaign was launched also to publicize that Tulsidas was born at Rajapur near Chitrakoot. However during the last few years many research scholars have done good work to locate the real Rajapur, the birthplace of Tulsidas. Following facts have emerged out of this research work.

  1. Moolgosiancharit is not a reliable book.
  2. According to Banda district Gazetteer Tulsi came to Rajapur after crossing Yamuna River. According to Imperial Gazetteer of India, Kolkata, Tulsi was the founder of Rajapur village. Therefore this Rajapur cannot be the birthplace of Tulsidas as the founder of the place cannot take birth at the same place.
  3. The so called Manuscript of Ramcharitmanas, which has been placed in Rajapur Tulsi Temple, Chitrakoot is not written by Tulsidas. The manuscript must have been written later on after the life time of Tulsidas.
  4. There is no trace of ancestors of Tulsidas in Rajapur(Chitrakoot)
  5. Tulsidas himself had found  Vikrampur, Rajapur, Duban ka Purwa near Chitrakoot so the question of his taking birth there does not arise.
  6. The so called room in Rajapur village which is claimed to be the birthplace of Tulsidas is not traceable. It is said that this room has been washed away by the River Yamuna; So the existence of this room from the beginning itself is doubtful.
  7. The claimant of Rajapur (Chitrakoot) as birthplace of Tulsidas cite some free hold Land paper given by the state which is according to them is still in the possession of some people who claim themselves as the descendant of Tulsidas. But the fact is that Tulsidas was unmarried. He never established any Matha, Monastery  or traditions of disciples.
  8. Rajapur is not a pilgrimgage place where the ancestors of Tulsidas came and lived with Tulsidas.
  9. The mention of so called wife of Tulsidas Ratnawali and other things are all imaginations of some people who do not want to accept the truth Infact Ratnawali was the wife of Tulsi of Devipatan Distt Balrampur who wrote Lava Kush Kand, Another Ratnawali was the name of wife of Tulsi of Soro Distt. Etah. Tulsi das himself has said that he was unmarried- “Mere Byah Na Barekhe”. (Vinay Patrika-76) He further said that Kahu Ki Beti SE Beta Na Vyahab. (Kavitawali Uttar Kand 106).
  10. The main purpose  of these people who want to prove Rajapur, Chitrakoot as the birth place of Tulsidas is to grab thousand of rupees given by Government as grant.

Sanatan Dharma Parishad worked hard and has been successful in locating the birth place of Tulsidas who wrote Ramcharitmanas. An international conference was held in Lucknow University on the occasion of the 500th Birth anniversary of Tulsidas. In this conference the claimants of Birth place of Tulsidas from Rajapur Gonda, Rajapur- Chitrakoot and Soro (Etah) placed their views and logic before a panel which included two retired Judges of High Court. The claims of Rajapur (Chitrakoot) and Soro. Etah were rejected. It was decided that Rajapur (Gonda) is the real birthplace of Tulsidas on the following grounds.

Even today there is a grassland (Gochar Bhumi) known as the Atmaram Tepra. Atmaram was the name of the father of Tulsidas, it is found in the revenue record of the Gonda Distt. U.P. India

There is the confluence of Sarju and Ghaghra rivers near Pasaka, the    muth of Swami Narharidas  who was the religious teacher of Tulsidas. This Confluence is called ‘Timuhani’ as mentioned by Tulsidas in Rajmcharit manas. (Trividh Tap Nasak Timuhani’ Ram Charit Manas, Bal Kand).

Tulsidas has written that he heard the story of Valmiki Ramayan from his guru at Sukarkhet i.e. Pasaka in his childhood. Pasaka is very near to Rajapur. It is certain and quite natural that child Tulsi came to the muth of Narharidas in his childhood who told him the story of Lord Ram. “Mai Puni Nij Guru Sun Suni Katha So Sukerkhet”. (Ram Charit Manas, Bal Kand, Doha-30)

Tulsidas has written his books in Avadhi, the language spoken in Gonda and surrounding districts. His first book is (Ram Lal Nahachhu), Nahachhu is a peculiar religious Ceremony done at the time of marriage in Gonda and surrounding areas only. So it is clear that Tulsidas knew about this ceremony well.

Even these days in these areas people of Dube do Shradh and Tarpon in the name of Atmaram, Hulsi and Tulsi as their ancestors. The mother of Tulsidas ws from Dahaura. Village- Dadhival Kund in Distt Bharaich in the neighboring distt of Gonda.

In Rajapur (Gonda) , a number of institutions like Tulsi temple, Tulsi Van, Tulsi Koop, Tulsi Kund etc have come up in the memory of Tulsidas.

Tulsidas himself has said that “Tulsi Tiharo Ghar Jayo Hai Ghar Ko” (Kavitawali UttarKand-122) it means Tulsidas was born near Ayodhya wich is the birth place of Lord Ram.

Goswami has mentioned the places and personalities of Gonda and Ayodhya which is a strong proof that he was born in Gonda. He has mentioned about Baharaich, “ Jag Baharaich Jay” (Dohawali-496) Poet Holrai of Barabanki, Aneerai Bhatta of Nawabaganj Distt Gonda. The first biographer and friend of Tulsidas, Benemadhav Das was from pasaka, the birth place of Tulsidas.

In fact, during the medieval period of Indian history ther are found four saints whose name was Tulsidas but Tulsidas who work Ramcharitmanas is different from the other three Tulsidas., One Tulsidas was from Hathras He wrote Ghatramayan. Second Tulsidas . One Tulsidas was born in Tulsipur of Balrampur district. He wrote Lava Kusha Kand. Another Tulsidas was born is soro district Etah. He wrote Chhandavali Ramayan and Chhapaya Ramayan.

Akbar the great, son of Humayu was contemporary of Tulsidas. His period is 1556-1605 Ad. There was another king whose name was Akbar. He was the son of Shah Alam. His period is 1806 to 1837 AD. The Gazetteers were written during the period of Akbar second, which makes mention of Tulsidas. Tulsidas mentioned in these Gazetteers is not the earlier Tulsidas who wrote Ramcharitmanas.

The fourth world Tulsi conference was held on December 26 and 27, 2005 in Kshi Vidyapith, Varanasi by Sanatan Dharm Parishad and Tulsi Janma Bhumi Sukarkhet Vikass Samiti. It was presided over by prof. Surendra Singh, the Vice Chancellor of Kashi Vidyapeeth. Following resolutions were passed in this conference.

The birth place of Goswami Tulsidas is near Ayodhya, at village Rajapur (Sukerkhet) District- Gonda. There is no need of any further discussion on this subject in future.

Goswami Tulsidas was Unmarried.

It was resolved that these five facts should be incorporated in the Historical and literary documents.

The Chief Minister of U.P. Shri Akhilesh Yadav has endorsed this fact by announcing in the Assembly a grant of Rupees twenty lack for the development of Rajapur.

In reply to a question in the assembly the State Govt. of U.P has instructed that this fact should be endorsed in the book Kavyanjali prescribed for study in Intermediate and Kavya Sasnkalan for High School.
